A total of 85 Arado Ar 65 fighter aircraft were produced. They were similar to their predecessors, but equipped with more powerful in-line engines instead of radials. Ar 65 aircraft had more wing area and longer wingspans to accommodate the additional weight of the aircraft.

Three Ar 65 prototype aircraft were produced for testing during 1931. Production aircraft started being built in 1933. They were soon deployed to fighter groups where they served through 1935. The Ar 65 continued in production for use as a trainer until 1936. In 1937 Bulgaria acquired 12 Ar 65 aircraft.
